Mazda Motor Corporation revealed the all-new Mazda 2 (Demio known as Mazda in Japan) sedan at Guangzhou Motor Show 2007.
This version of Mazda's latest model has a dynamic and elegant, designed to attract new customers in the rapidly growing China B-car segment. The new Mazda 2 sedan is produced by Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co., Ltd. at its Nanjing plant, and will go on sale in the first half of 2008 the company network Changan Mazda Motor Sales.

Noriaki Yamada, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mazda Motor (China) Co., Ltd. said: "With the introduction of a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback and the B-car segment in China, we have completed Our product launches, B, C and CD segments, which represent the three main categories of Chinese vehicles. New models will greatly strengthen Mazda's product assembly in China. "

Senior Executive Managing, Kiyoshi Ozaki, spoke about Mazda's global growth and China business at the press conference. "In fiscal 2007 we expect to achieve our seventh consecutive year of profit growth and fourth consecutive year of record profits. Henceforth, we will strive to maintain our current growth by increasing the value of our brand and improve our business efficiency under our new mid-term plan to promote Mazda and our long-term vision for technology development, Sustainable Zoom-Zoom. Achieve our medium-term target for China of '300, 000 units of production and sales in 2010 "will be a decisive factor in our plans," he said.

This year, Mazda completed the consolidation of its production, sales and product foundations, which it has been building in order to achieve its mid-term objectives.
President and CEO of Mazda Motor (China) Co., Ltd., Satoshi Tachikake: "We have set up a production structure that comprises three facilities: the Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Nanjing plant, which was completed in September and features Mazda's latest production and machining technologies, the Changan Ford Mazda Automobile plant in Chongqing, and FAW Car Company in Changchun.

is also updating its sales network in order to achieve its mid-term target. In addition to the existing FAW Mazda Motor Sales Co., Ltd. (FMSC), Changan Mazda Motor Sales Co., Ltd. (CMSC) has been newly established, and sales will commence through the two channels from January 2008.

Noriaki Yamada, who is in charge of China sales, added, "The newly established Mazda Motor (China) Beijing Office will function as the representative of Mazda Motor Corporation. It will establish a reliable sales network by developing a unified brand strategy for the two sales channels and policies that will always benefit the customer. Mazda's core products will be progressively introduced through the two sales channels to strengthen our product lineup. We intend to continue expanding our sales network, from the current 104 dealerships to a total of 160 for both channels by January 2008, and establish over 300 dealers by 2010."

In sedan form it looks bigger and a little more conservative, but despite the high beltline and tail, the lines of the ‘booted’ 2 work pretty well. The overall form is strengthened by the pronounced rear wheel-arches and swooping roofline.

Neither, it would appear, has the extra weight sitting over the rear wheels compromised the handling. Heavy rain and flooded roads on our first drive meant limited opportunities to stretch it out, but, on first impressions, the sedan feels as sharp at the wheel as the hatch.

If anything, that extra weight over the rear assists the overall balance by settling the tail.

The arrival of the sedan has had another impact, it has dislodged the three-door from the 2 range.

“We didn’t want to have three body styles… we don’t believe it (dropping the three-door) will make any difference overall (to sales),” Mazda National Marketing Manager Alastair Doak said.
Mazda has axed the sedan version of its popular 2 city car just eight months after the model was introduced.

The Japanese brand launched the four-door variant last May as part of a switch to Thailand production, but the sedan will make a premature departure after Mazda Australia announced today that it has been forced to revert to Japanese production to ensure adequate supply.

The Thai-built sedan replaced the range's three-door hatch and was expected to account for 20 per cent of Mazda2 sales. Mazda Australia spokesman Steve Maciver says the switch back to Japan is unlikely to harm sales considering the five-door hatch was always the most popular model in the Mazda2 range.

"We have taken the opportunity to move back to Japan to free up some additional production at that factory so that Thailand and the neighbouring countries can continue to ramp up as they are," says Maciver. "It means that we'll lose the sedan, but we're not going back to three-door, we're sticking to the five-door hatch.

"Even though we attracted new customers with the sedan, we're still pretty confident that the five-door hatch is the right proposition."

Mazda says there will be no price increases despite the model no longer benefitting from Australia's free trade agreement with Thailand, instead incurring a five per cent import tariff. All trim levels will also receive a minor freshen-up.

The entry-level Neo (priced at $16,990 driveaway as part of a nationwide promotion) gains a new 15-inch steel wheel design and body-coloured door handles, as well as new seat trim and piano black highlights on the inside.

The Neo still won't have the full safety complement, though, with buyers needing to shell out an extra $450 for potentially life-saving front-side and curtain airbags (although that option also now includes steering wheel-mounted audio controls, too).

The mid-range Maxx ($19,990 driveaway) also gains new seat trim and piano black highlights.

Two new exterior colours will also be available on Neo and Maxx models.

The range-topping Genki won't arrive until the middle of the year, and will feature additional equipment.

There have been no changes to the engines used in the Mazda 2 range, with the 1.5-litre petrol engine continuing to be offered with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmissions.

Today's announcement comes only weeks after Ford launched its new rival Fiesta sedan - a car that is built off the same underpinnings as the Mazda 2 sedan and sourced from the same Thailand factory. A Ford Australia spokesman said the Fiesta will continue to be imported from Thailand.

The Mazda 2 sedan first went on sale Down Under in May 2010, following the hatch bodystyle to market by almost three years. However as the sedan arrived at the same time as the hatch received a mid life facelift, it gets from launch the brands large smiley grille (which we’re fans of). Whilst the sedan is 25cm longer than the hatch (with all the extra length appearing behind the rear wheels) it still manages to look a little sporty – not something we’d say about most other Supermini segment sedans. The doors close with more of a ‘thud’ like sound rather than a cheap and nasty ‘clang’.

The sedan’s rising beltline from front to rear = the rear wheels appearing smaller than they are as the standard eight spoke alloys certainly aren’t undersized at 15 inch in diameter.

Most immediately noticeable are the design changes to the front of the car. The 2 now gets Mazda’s family face, sharing the signature ‘cheerful’ lower grille, deeper fog-lamp bezels, widened front bumper and enlarged logo in the upper grille.

Both sedan and five-door hatch share the same steeply sloping shoulder line and prominent front fenders. Things change though from the A-pillars back. While access to the rear of the sedan is a little compromised by the slope of the roof, its rising belt-line and high tail is responsible for a large 450 litre boot (nearly doubling the hatch’s 250 litre cargo area)

Braking feel is good – we had more than enough opportunity to suss that out over roads that were awash. Up front are 14-inch ventilated discs, and eight-inch drums at the rear. (And forget the arguments; rear drums work perfectly well on a car this size and weight.) Anti-lock brakes with electronic brake assistance are standard fitment.

There are also some key changes to the suspension that are quite apparent at the wheel. While MacPherson struts up front and the torsion-bar rear carry over into the new range, the monotube rear dampers of the outgoing model have been replaced with twin-tube dampers (now a feature of front and rear suspensions).

Mazda unveiled its Mazda2 sedan today at the 2007 Guangzhou Motor Show in China. Set to go on sale during the first half of 2008 in China, the Mazda2 will be produced by Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co., Ltd. at the company’s Nanjing plant. Mazda is also planning the launch of a five-door Mazda2 in China.
“By introducing the four-door sedan and five-door hatchback to the B-car segment in China, we will have completed our product launches in the B, C and CD segments, which represent the three major Chinese vehicle classes. At the 2007 Guangzhou Motor Show, Mazda will promote the Zoom-Zoom brand promise by displaying twelve vehicles from five model lines, which represent Mazda's core products that are scheduled for launch.

The display will include the Mazda5 and Mazda3 5-door hatchback, which are due to be introduced through FMSC. The Mazda5 is a stylish global minivan that will go on sale in China from December 2007. The Mazda3 5-door hatchback is one of Mazda's core models and supports global sales mainly in Europe, Japan and Asia. It is due to commence sales in China during the first half of 2008.

The all-new Mazda 2 five-door hatchback and sedan models that will be launched through the new CMSC channel will also be showcased. The all-new Mazda 2 five-door hatchback is the first of Mazda's evolved Zoom-Zoom new generation products. It has received excellent reviews, including the prestigious 2008 RJC Car of the Year award in Japan, since its global rollout commenced this summer. Production began at Changan Ford Mazda Automobile's Nanjing plant at the end of October, with sales to follow in January 2008.

Mazda has unveiled today the 2011 Mazda2 sedan facelift which will go on sale in Australia. The 2011 Mazda2 sedan facelift shows the same front design as its hatchback version and features a 450 liters boot. The 2011 Mazda2 sedan facelift comes with 15 inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning and power windows and mirrors.

The safety system featured by the 2011 Mazda2 sedan facelift include front, side and curtain SRS airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD).

The 2011 Mazda2 sedan facelift is offered with a 1.5 liter petrol engine that develops 76kW and has a fuel consumption of 6.4 liters per 100km. The 2011 Mazda2 sedan facelift can be fitted with both a manual or an automatic transmission.

The 2011 Mazda2 sedan facelift price will be announced at a later date.
The Mazda 2 was launched hours ago at Prima Merdu’s third and latest showroom in Bandar Puteri Puchong. Available in two bodystyles – five-door hatchback and four-door sedan – the supermini is imported CBU from Thailand. It rolls off the Auto Alliance plant in Rayong, which will also supply us with the upcoming Ford Fiesta.

The B-segment Mazda is powered by a 1.5-litre MZR engine producing 103 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 135 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, figures that are slightly shy of the similar sized engines from the Vios and City. The DOHC 16v unit with Sequential Valve Timing (SV-T) is paired to a four-speed automatic; I was personally hoping for a manual version, which is available both in Thailand and Singapore, but no such luck for us.
You can choose between the standard V Grade and the sporty R Grade for both bodystyles. While both grades come with the same MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension, the R Grade suspension gets “Sport Tuning”. Front brakes are ventilated discs while rears are drums. The 2′s steering system is of the EPS variety. Opt for the R Grade and your Mazda 2 will roll on low profile 195/45 R16 rubber while the V Grade does with 185/55 R15 tyres.

Dimensions wise, Mazda’s little hatchback appears very petite. Width is identical with the Toyota Yaris and Honda Jazz down to the mm (1,695) and the 3,922 mm length is only 2 mm longer than the Jazz. However, the reason behind its svelte looks is the low roofline – the 2′s height of 1,478 mm is 47 mm less than the Jazz’s. While the hatch looks cute and pert, the same can’t be said of the sedan; that protruding boot just spoils the proportions. Its overall length of 4,263 mm is a substantial 132 mm shorter than the Honda City’s. Wheelbase is 2,490 mm for both variants.
