The 7 Series is a luxury car and full-size sedan is only available in four-door sedan or extended. The highlight of the luxury BMW 7-series in general, see the new technologies and design issues before on other lines in the race BMW model range.

The first generation of the 7 series was known as E23 and was produced for ten years between 1977 and 1987th All models of the E23 7 series with the twelve-valve 6-cylinder M30 engine from the 745i side, the performance model with a special high-engine 3.2-liter six-cylinder-equipped M30 was built. In the 7-series from 1985 to 1986 was equipped with an optional driver side airbags.

The second generation of the 7 series was known as E32 and was produced from 1986 to 1994. Even at the upper end of the range luxury oriented, 7-series, many of the latest innovations available in the automotive industry. This generation came with a five-speed automatic transmission features the option of a manual transmission. New features have been built in the E38 things as a series of high-pressure headlamp washers, a power sunroof, stereo system with fourteen speakers and four subwoofers, a 6-disc CD changer, onboard satellite navigation, automatic air conditioning with separate controls for the driver and the passenger seat, three-position memory driver and front seat front air bag.
The fourth-generation 7 Series E65/E66 was that this generation has been known production from 2002 to 2008. This generation had standard features like the system to a video screen mounted on the dashboard and a controller mounted together in the center console. With a system of eight different menus, the drive system includes automatic climate control, audio, navigation, landing gear and communication systems. This generation saw the introduction of the ZF transmission with eight reports that BMW Dynamic Drive Control called, it has settings for normal, sport and sport + mode.

The E38 generation (1994–2001) had a five-speed automatic. The engine variants in Europe were 725tds, 728i, 730i, 730d, 735i, 740i (4.0 and 4.4 L), 740d and 750i (with a 5.4 L V12 322 bhp (240 kW; 326 PS) engine, as was used in the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph).

In America, the models were sold as the 740i, 740iL and 750iL. The 740i and 740iL shared the same 4.0 L V8 engine in model year 1995, but the next year the V8 grew to 4.4L while stated power stayed at 282 hp (210 kW), though torque grew from 295 to 310 lb·ft (400 to 420 N·m). Then again coinciding with the 1999 facelift, the V8's power again stayed the same but now torque grew further to 324 lb·ft (439 N·m), due to new variable valve timing. The 740iL is essentially a long-wheelbase 740i (the "L" is from the German word for long, "lang"). The considerably rarer 5.4 L V12-powered 750iL was only available as a long-body; there was no E38 750i in the US lineup. The E38 was the first car in the world to feature Xenon headlights.

The 750iL was BMW's flagship sedan. It was featured in the 1997 film Tomorrow Never Dies as the car driven by James Bond (Pierce Brosnan).[11]

An E38 735i is the feature car in the 2002 film The Transporter, starring Jason Statham.

The fourth generation was available in four different variants: the standard-wheelbase E65 (2990 mm, 118 in), the extended-wheelbase E66 (3130 mm, 123 in), the High Security version E67 and the hydrogen powered version E68. It dropped the manual transmission entirely.

The E65/E66/E67/E68 7 Series featured BMW's first of a kind iDrive system, consisting of a video screen in the dashboard and a controller mounted on the center console that is used in a similar way to a computer mouse. Using a system of eight menus, most of the car's climate, audio, navigation, suspension and communication settings are controlled via iDrive. However, the system has been criticized by many automotive writers as being too complex and not intuitive enough.

"Active" Seat continuous passive motion technology was made standard equipment on the 750/760 models and included in the Luxury Seating Package with heated and ventilated seats for driver and front passenger on the 745 models.

The car was available in thirteen variants[12]—of those, 11 were on sale in Europe, with five available in the U.S. since diesel models were not available there.

The 5th generation F01/F02 came out January 2009. The F01/F02 heralded the introduction of the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. Five variants are showcased at debut, the 750Li, the 740Li, the 750i, the 740i and the 730d.

Numerous engines also power the 7 Series worldwide. BMW offers diesel, straight 6, V8 and V12 motors. An all-aluminum 3.0-liter straight-six cylinder diesel engine produces 245 hp (183 kW; 248 PS). The peak torque figure of 540 N·m (400 lb·ft) comes in at 1,750 rpm up through 3,000 rpm. Its 194g/km emission figure is class-leading for conventionally powered luxury cars, as is its 38.7 mpg[clarification needed] fuel consumption figure.[18]

BMW switched from a MacPherson strut front suspension to a double wishbone design for improved handling. The F01 is also available in a bulletproof version.[19]

The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 2008.[24] In August 2009 BMW announced the production versions of the ActiveHybrid 7, together with BMW ActiveHybrid X6.

The 2011 ActiveHybrid 7 is a mild hybrid and features a 0.4-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack.[25] The electric motor is combined with BMW’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and new 8-speed automatic transmission to accelerate from 0 – 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds.[26] Estimated EPA fuel economy is 17 miles per US gallon (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg-imp) city and 26 miles per US gallon (9.0 L/100 km; 31 mpg-imp) for highway, which represents almost an 18% improvement over the non-hybrid 750i/Li.[26]

US sales began in June 2010 with a base MSRP price of $103,125 for the ActiveHybrid 7 and $107,025 for the long wheelbase ActiveHybrid 7L. The ActiveHybrid 7 qualifies for a $900

The 2012 BMW 7-Series ranks 6 out of 11 Super Luxury Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 41 published reviews and test drives of the BMW 7-Series, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Reviewers love the 2012 BMW 7-Series for its nimble handling and comfortable interior, but say the 7-Series’ cabin isn’t quite as luxurious as other super luxury cars.

For 2012, the BMW 7-Series continues to balance comfort with an engaging driving experience. Three engine choices are available in the 7-Series, including a twin-turbo six-cylinder engine in 740i and 740Li models. While standard V8 powerplants are common among super luxury cars, test drivers say there’s no need to avoid six-cylinder 7-Series if you’re concerned about power. Edmunds says it's just as quick from zero to 60 mph as a Lexus LS.

Still, if you’re shopping for a sedan with ample power, BMW offers turbocharged V8 and V12 engines that make the 7-Series accelerate just as well as it handles. Most reviewers also approve of BMW’s Driving Dynamics Control, which allows ride control and steering adjustments that range from “Comfort” to “Sport +”. Still, shoppers looking for a car with a posh, serene ride should be aware that the 7-Series is more of a driver’s car than some of its rivals.

While most agree that the 2012 BMW 7-Series’ exciting driving dynamics make it fun to drive, one reviewer says that the current 7-Series no longer strikes the balance between comfort and sport that he has come to expect. If you’re looking for a super luxury car that coddles you with an ultra-smooth ride, competitors like the Lexus LS and Mercedes-Benz S-Class might be more appealing. Additionally, savvy shoppers may notice that little has changed for the 2012 model year. If you like the 7-Series, but want a lower price, don’t overlook a certified pre-owned or used BMW 7-Series.

The 7-Series’ interior is loved by auto writers love for its quality materials and a decent suite of standard tech features. The cabin, albeit luxurious, is still not as opulent as some of rivals. Features like heated and cooled seats and satellite radio are often standard equipment at this price point, but you’ll need to add option packages to get them on the 740i. Still, the 7-Series impresses critics with its iDrive system, which is much more user-friendly than earlier versions. The BMW 7-Series is also roomy. Ample passenger space is available front and rear, and choosing an extended-wheelbase Li model increases the 7-series’ back seat comfort, which is good even on standard wheelbase models.

Three engines and two wheelbase lengths are available on the 2012 BMW 7-Series. Regular 7-Series models have a 120.9-inch wheelbase, while Li models are 5.5 inches longer. BMW 740i and 750i models are available in either style, while the 760 is a Li-only model. Choosing a stretched 740Li or 750Li generally costs between $3,900 and $4,500 more, depending on the drivetrain you choose.

At $71,000, the 740i comes equipped with a twin-turbo six-cylinder engine, push-button start, leather upholstery, four-zone climate control, navigation, Bluetooth and a 10-speaker stereo with 12 gigabytes of music storage, iPod adapter and HD radio. The 750i starts at $84,300, and comes with all of the features listed above, as well as interior items such as upgraded leather on 20-way adjustable heated front seats, a power trunk lid and soft-closing automatic doors. A more powerful 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 is also under the 750i’s hood. All-wheel drive is available on 750i and Li models for an additional $3,000.

The top-rung 760Li starts at roughly $137,000 and competes in an elite class of super luxury cars like the Mercedes S600. The 760Li comes with a powerful, twin-turbo V12 engine, top- and side-view parking cameras, heated and ventilated seats at all four corners and power rear sunshades.
