new mobile application for the Apple iPhone or any Android smartphone. Some of the features include a “Car Locator,” a “Remote Heater Start,” an electronic “Vehicle Dashboard,” and a “Car Check” diagnostic tool.

New LED daytime running lights give the front more character, and are joined by new lower door moldings, a revised front bumper, and silver roof rails as standard on all variants. The tail lamps have also been updated with LED detailing, and a unique six-spoke 18-inch wheel design with a silver matte finish is also availabl

The Volvo XC90 offers classic Volvo attributes in a midsize SUV. An IIHS Top Safety Pick several years running it's safe, comfortable, and practical. For 2012, Volvo has moved to a trim lineup which includes Premier, Premier Plus, and Platinum trims. The V8 engine is no longer available.

The XC90 seats up to seven people. Rear and front passenger seats fold down to provide more cargo room. A second-row child booster seat is standard equipment. The 240-hp 3.2-liter inline-six is available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, matched with a Geartronic six-speed automatic transmission, allowing driver selectable shifting. When equipped for towing it can tow up to 5,000 pounds. Sirius satellite radio and Bluetooth are standard features. Safety features include electronic stability control, side-impact and side curtain airbags, Roll Stability Control, Blind Spot Information System, and all-disc anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution.

At its launch for the 2003 model year, it was presented with a choice of two trim levels, the 2.5T and the T6. The 2.5T was the entry level version and offered a 2.5L 20 valve turbocharged inline 5 engine putting out 210 hp (160 kW; 210 PS) and 236 ft·lbf (320 N·m) mated to an Aisin co-developed AW55-50/51 5 speed automatic. The T6 offered a 2.9L 24 valve twin turbocharged inline 6 with 272 hp (203 kW; 276 PS) and 280 ft·lbf (380 N·m) mated to a GM-sourced, Volvo modified 4T65EV/GT 4 speed automatic. While the 2.5T came standard with front wheel drive, a Haldex Traction all wheel drive system was optional. The T6 was offered only with the AWD system.

A new Yamaha V8 engine was added in 2005. This 4.4 L Volvo B8444S V8 engine produced 292 hp (218 kW; 296 PS) for the first few models later upgraded to 311 hp (232 kW; 315 PS) and 325 ft·lbf (441 N·m) of torque. The XC90 V8 was priced at just over US$45,000. Volvo sold just over 40,000 XC90 units in North America that year.[3]

The XC90 won the North American Car of the Year award and Motor Trend magazine's Sport/Utility of the Year for 2003.

The XC90 was updated for 2007 with a restyled front and rear and a revised interior. The 235 hp (175 kW; 238 PS) 3.2 L SI6 straight-6 engine replaced the 208 hp (155 kW; 211 PS) B524T2 straight-5 in the base model for the US market. The 2007 XC90 debuted in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show.

The XC90 is produced at Volvo's Torslanda Plant (Torslandaverken) in Sweden.

The Passion Red avatar of the XC90 was heavily showcased in the 2009 Bollywood blockbuster, 3 Idiots, which has since become Bollywood's biggest box office success to date. Curiosity and demand for the car went up hugely in India and elsewhere, after its prominent feature in the film.

As with all Volvo models, the car's safety is a key part of its design. The Volvo XC90's front end is specifically designed to absorb frontal impacts and also deflect any pedestrians up on to the hood of the vehicle rather than underneath the vehicle. Volvo has patented the unique frontal structure that has renowned crumple zones, and a pre-determined positions for the engine and other ancillaries during a frontal impact.[citation needed]

The XC90's roof is reinforced with ultra high strength steel to help prevent a collapse in the passenger cavity in the event of a roll over. This Volvo system is called ROPS, and is closely associated with the Roll Stability Control (RSC), DSTC, and SIPS systems of Volvo to prevent and ultimately minimize effects of a pending accident.

The XC90 has been designed on the rear end to absorb impact energy, but the occupants are also protected by a whiplash protection system. This Volvo WHIPS system cradles the entire body of the occupants when they are jolted during a rear end collision.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Volvo XC90 their Top Safety Pick award. The XC90 was granted the IIHS's highest rating of "good" in front, side, rear and roof strength tests and has Electronic Stability Control as standard equipment to receive the award.[4]

The industry-first Roll Stability Control was first introduced in XC90 in 2003

Seven seats

The passenger compartment is very spacious and features a modern uncluttered design. Seven seats are standard on most markets. On some there is also a five seats alternative.

The seating position gives the driver a commanding view over the traffic and the passengers a comfortable seating position. All the passenger seats can be folded to create a fully flat loading floor.

The tailgate is divided into an upper and a lower section. This makes the Volvo XC90 a very flexible and versatile car in every day usage.

The XC90 is built as a passenger car, with a unitary body and the same type of chassis as that found in Volvo's sedan models. The chassis, with spring struts at the front and Multilink axle at the rear, are tuned for a stable, controlled drive and alert steering response.

The Multilink rear axle is an independent rear suspension system featuring a number of links and it is designed to offer a good combination of controlled wheel movements and high ride comfort. A long wheelbase and wide track, together with a very torsionally rigid body, contribute to the predictable, controlled driving manners.

All-Wheel Drive (AWD) for enhanced stability

All-Wheel Drive is an electronically controlled system that distributes engine power between the front and rear wheels quickly and automatically, depending on which wheel pair (front or rear wheels) has the best grip at the moment. The system helps enhance stability and reduces understeer and oversteer, contributing to increased driver control and a comfortable ride.

The system is equipped with PreTension® which improves take-off speed and delivers higher traction on slippery surfaces.

Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC)

Volvo's Dynamic Stability and Traction Control system continuously registers the car's roll rate, making it possible to detect slowly building skids at an early stage. Generally, the system helps stabilise the car in evasive manoeuvres, particularly when the car is exposed to high lateral forces.

The in-line six-cylinder 3.2-litre naturally aspirated engine has been upgraded and features an improved crankshaft and less internal friction. It now offers 243 hp and maximum torque is 320 Nm.
It meets the Euro 5 legislation.

D5 and D3

The Volvo XC90 can be specified with the high-performance D5 engine that produces 200 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque. There is also a front-wheel drive (FWD) 2.4 five-cylinder D3 turbodiesel with 163 hp available. Both engines the Euro 5 legislation.

DRIVER SUPPORT AND SAFETY SYSTEMS

Roll Stability Control (RSC) and Roll-Over Protection System (ROPS)

Roll Stability Control is an active system that intervenes in situations when the car senses that there is a risk of rolling over. This function helps stabilise the car and reduces the risk of rolling over in an accident.

If a rollover accident should still occur, the Roll-Over Protection System helps protect the passengers. A network of beams in the body structure helps distribute and absorb the resulting forces. In addition, an electronic sensor registers if the car is about to roll over and accordingly activates the seat belt pre-tensioners and the Inflatable Curtains.

Park Assist Camera - an extra eye to the rear

In order to protect objects standing behind the car and to aid parking, the XC90 can be equipped a Park Assist Camera.

Volvo On Call combined with Bluetooth

The Volvo On Call system can now be combined with the Bluetooth mobile phone service. The Bluetooth connection has been upgraded to allow not only hands-free phone conversations but also music streaming from a preferred Bluetooth enabled portable music player. Volvo is actually the only brand to offer Bluetooth music streaming throughout the entire vehicle range.
New is also a mobile application that makes sure that the driver can stay in touch with the parked car via an iPhone or Android smart phone. The mobile application is an extension of Volvo On Call, which is presently available in 12 European countries plus Russia and Brazil.

Now, the system has been reinvented. Owners of all new Volvos from Model Year 2012 with Volvo On Call can download the new application that opens up a range of connectivity possibilities. The mobile app is free and downloaded via the iPhone and Android application stores. The app is designed to offer the owner an intuitive, easy-to-use relationship with the car from a distance.

Strong body structure

The Volvo XC90 is a modern SUV, built like a passenger car with highly efficient deformation zones, a low centre of gravity and advanced systems to help minimise the risk of personal injuries, irrespective of the situation and accident type.

The exterior systems have the task of distributing and absorbing incoming collision forces so that the passenger compartment remains as intact and undamaged as possible. A gently rounded front and an extra beam below the front bumper help reduce the risk of injury to other road users.

SIPS, WHIPS and extended IC

Volvo Cars has developed a number of in-house functionality and driver support, such as WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System), SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) and IC (Inflatable Curtain). All are fitted as standard in the Volvo XC90. Certain components have undergone further development specifically for the XC90 model. For instance, the Inflatable Curtain has been extended so that it also covers passengers in the third row of seats. All seven seats are equipped with three-point inertia-reel seat belts, belt pre-tensioners and head restraints.
