More than thirty years, ALPINA has created a unique vehicle is based on the BMW 3-Series car, in order to meet only the toughest. Earlier this success story continues back more than 6,000 units had been the legendary 1978 BMW ALPINA B6 2.8 - revolutionary in its time, because of its six-cylinder engine.
This success story is continued in a visible way, the BMW ALPINA B3 Bi-Turbo. Pleasure, attention to detail and a unique driving experience combined, creating a synergy of style and driving dynamics.

B3 Bi-Turbo line is presented as a hitherto unprecedented diversity, which includes Saloon, Touring, Coupé and Convertible. Seeing is believing!
The six-cylinder engine cylinder petrol manages to accommodate a couple and power in one. Compact, agile and efficient than any other car in its segment 400nm (£ 294-ft) of torque at 1300rpm, with a peak between 3800rpm and 5000rpm and 500 Nm (368 pounds-feet), offering a lot of punch and tone, the rocket launch, as the firm B3 Bi-Turbo if necessary, or supreme navigation button with pedestrian traffic.
The omnipresence of its sporty nature of the medium turns freely, with a wonderful soundtrack, a maximum of 7000 rpm, with up to 360 hp (265kW) along the way from 5500rpm - 6000rpm.

The extremely durable MAHLE pistons use allows a maximum power of 1.1 bar 9.4:1 compression. Consequently, a special high-power 121hp (89kW) per liter and a mean maximum pressure of 21 bar.
BMW ALPINA automobiles have always been known for its excellent combination of fuel economy and performance. The attraction of the B3 Bi-Turbo is in its V8 performance with the advantages of a much lighter and remarkably efficient 3.0-liter inline six.
A look at the technical data confirm that the B3 Bi-Turbo STI best in class! Lead its segment in terms of emissions performance, fuel consumption and CO2.
Intense driving experience and an immediate bond B3 Bi-Turbo is clearly influenced by fine materials and ergonomic design. Standard leather interior sport seats comfortable excellent lateral support, and electronic control.
The SWITCH-TRONIC sports leather steering wheel covered in finest ALPINA LAVALINA leather is a joy to touch and affords a clear view of the ALPINA typical blue instruments with their red pointers. As demanded by any enthusiastic driver, the provision of essential oil temperature information is provided by an analog instrument located below the rev counter.
Alpina unveiled the B3 S Biturbo at the Geneva Motor Show. The tuning kit will be available for Sedan, Coupe, Estate and Convertible 3-Series and is based on improving especially the car’s performances.

The 3.0-liter engine has been tuned to deliver an impressive 400hp at 6000rpm with a maximum torque of 397lbs-ft at 4500rpm. the result is a sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 186 mph.

In order to obtain this impressive performances, Alpina optimized the air intake and air filter, added a new exhaust system, installed high-strength MAHLE pistons and also added a high-performance cooling system.

The car sits on 19" light-alloy wheels with a three-dimensional sweep, each of them carrying 20 spokes. The interior gets leather sport seats, the ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC leather sports steering and blue ALPINA instrument display.

Innovative, turbo-charged automobiles have always played a central role in ALPINA’s more than 45-year history as a manufacturer - the 1989 BMW ALPINA B10 Bi-Turbo is an excellent example, having achieved true cult status.

In 2008 the BMW ALPINA B3 Bi-Turbo rekindled this tradition, combining Bi-Turbo charging with the compact dimensions of the BMW 3 Series.

The new BMW ALPINA B3 S Bi-Turbo couples improved performance and torque with reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions - it is the logical result of continuous engineering development at the highest level. The B3 S Bi-Turbo builds upon the highly-praised traits of its predecessor and presents itself as one of the most harmonious and multi-faceted sports cars in its segment. Whether Saloon, Coupé, Touring or Convertible, whether rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive - the B3 S Bi-Turbo marries explosive performance with a high level of comfort and everyday usability, addressing the needs of an unusually broad target group of automotive connoisseurs!
Agile, powerful athletes graced with endurance. The B3 S Bi-Turbo’s exceptional powerplant yields 294kW (400hp) at 6000rpm with a maximum torque of 540Nm (397lbs-ft) at 4500rpm. The sporting engine revs cleanly up to 7000rpm, yet offers massive thrust across a wide powerband - 400Nm (294lbs-ft) of torque is already available from just 1300rpm, all the way to 6000 rpm. Rarely has sporty, dynamic and economic driving been so enjoyable.

Prerequisite for this level of performance is the outstanding BMW 3.0-litre straight-six cylinder petrol engine with 2nd-generation direct injection (centrally-located injectors) combined with Bi-turbo charging. Permanent development and years of testing allow ALPINA engineers to extract high levels of output from this engine by utilising all the possibilities modern direct injection offers.

The air intake and air filter system have been optimised in terms of pressure loss, with the exhaust system optimised in terms of back pressure - both steps effectively making air-intake and exhaust-gas flows more efficient. In combination with high-strength MAHLE pistons, a maximum boost of 1.2 bar with a compression ratio of 9.4:1 can be achieved. The result is a class-leading specific output of 98kW (133hp) per litre. A high-performance cooling system with an additional cooling radiator helps maintain optimum operating temperatures, even in extreme driving situations.
The BMW specialists at ALPINA have unveiled the new B3 S Biturbo.

Originally launched in Geneva 2007 (as the B3 BiTurbo - notice the missing 'S'), the B3 S Biturbo features "improved performance and torque with reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions." It was designed to combine "explosive performance with a high level of comfort and everyday usability, addressing the needs of an unusually broad target group of automotive connoisseurs."

Broad is an understatement - the B3 S Biturbo is available as a Sedan, Coupe, Estate, or Convertible (with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive). Regardless of body style is selected, owners will be rewarded with a powerful 3.0-liter engine that produces 294 kW (400 PS / 395 hp) and 540 Nm (397 lb-ft) of torque. In order to eke out the extra performance, ALPINA engineers optimized the air intake and air filter (in terms of pressure loss), added a new exhaust system (which optimizes back pressure), installed high-strength MAHLE pistons (which allow for a maximum boost of 1.2 bar with a compression ratio of 9.4:1), and put in a high-performance cooling system.

Thanks to the engine modifications, the B3 S Biturbo can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 300km/h (186mph). In terms of efficiency, the car can achieve up to 9.7 l/100km (29.1 mpg imp) while emitting 224-225 g/km of CO2 in the combined EU test cycle.

As always, ALPINA added some modest styling tweaks to separate the B3 S Biturbo from the standard BMW 3-Series.  Highlights include 19-inch light-alloy wheels, a new rear valance (on the Coupe and Convertible), a front-lip spoiler, a leather sports steering wheel, and a unique ALPINA instrument cluster.

Following its recent world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the new BMW 335i-based Alpina B3 S Bi-Turbo is now available for order in the UK with first deliveries to start in July.

Offered in four-door saloon, Touring, Coupe and hardtop Convertible forms, the new B3 S comes with a modified 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight six upgraded to deliver a hefty 400HP at 6,000 rpm and 540Nm or 398.3 lb-ft of peak torque.

The 0-62mph (100km/h) sprint takes 4.7 seconds for both the saloon and coupe models which are also capable of achieving a top speed of 186mph or 300km/.

Alpina's take on the 335i range is identified on the outside by a redesigned front spoiler, a new rear diffuser which encloses the tailpipes and a different set of alloy wheels. The BMWs interiors are upgraded with a new steering wheel and modified instruments while Alpina also offers various lather trim options.

Prices for the Alpina B3 S Bi-Turbo start from £49,250 on-the-road for the sedan version.

Exceptional efficiency - more performance, better economy. Despite superior performance, the new BMW ALPINA B3 S Bi-Turbo retains its class leading fuel economy figures: just 9.7 l/100km (29.1 mpg) and 224-225 g/km CO2 in the combined EU test cycle and achieving EU5 Emission Standard (figures for all-wheel drive please see technical data).

The modern direct injection system enables especially efficient combustion at low throttle loads while the air flow and mapping optimisations improve real-world driving fuel economy by over 5%. The new B3 S Bi-Turbo shows once more, that innovative technology and dedicated engineering allow modern high-performance automobiles to achieve remarkable fuel economy.

The B3 S Bi-Turbo’s charm lies in its V8-like performance drawn from a lighter, much more frugal 3.0-litre straight-six with aluminium block and Bi-Turbo charging. This performance can be called up effortlessly and almost anywhere in the rev range. The 0-62mph sprint is a breeze and is over in just 4.7 seconds. Both the Saloon and Coupé can achieve a top speed of 300km/h (186mph).

The ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC offers up shifting characteristics for every taste and situation. While the automatic mode shifts gently and comfortably, the transmission reveals its true sporting qualities in manual mode: using the shift buttons on the back of the steering wheel, the driver can up-shift in just a few hundred milliseconds with no perceptible loss in power. Sporty drivers especially appreciate the blip of the throttle which synchronises revs on manual down-shifts, meaning nothing unsettles the balance of the car when using the whole rev range. Efficiency and driving pleasure are beautifully united in the B3 S Bi-
Turbo. Due to the massive torque, use of top gear on the autobahn is sufficient for almost all driving situations, and also exceedingly thrifty.

The BMW ALPINA Coupés und Convertibles based on the BMW 3 Series have always captivated the eye through their elegant, fine lines and tasteful presence. The dynamic appearance of the B3 S Bi-Turbo is in part defined by the modern and functional front spoiler. Engineered using the newest developments in aerodynamic design, the spoiler reduces lift at the front and enables optimal air flow to the high performance cooling system. The Coupé and Convertible carry a new rear valance which communicates a tasteful sporting charm through its integrated rear diffusor and two distinctive double-ended exhaust pipes, a little like the stern of powerful luxury yachts.

A fresh, evolutionary design with a clear heritage. The new ALPINA CLASSIC 19" light-alloy wheels underline the finely-proportioned forms of the new B3 S Bi-Turbo models. Reminiscent of a turbine and with a three-dimensional sweep, each of the 20 spokes leads from the hub right to the edge of the rim, making for a very fluid and dynamic appearance even when motionless. Unique: the new design retains the hidden air valve mounted in the wheel centre, which is covered by a lockable hub cover, leaving the wheels flawless in their form and beauty.

A warm sense of well-being thanks to fine materials, brilliant ergonomics and excellent safety. The comprehensive level of standard equipment convinces: leather sport seats offer excellent lateral support and comfort on long journeys, the ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC leather sports steering is luxurious to the touch, the blue ALPINA instrument display provides additional information such as engine oil temperature and a digital speed indicator.

Also as standard come high levels of safety and light-footed, agile handling. Firm rear sub-frame bushings increase the ALPINA suspension’s driving precision during quick changes in direction. The secret is the ideal 50/50 front/rear weight balance coupled with a supple suspension that’s neutral, even at the limit. The light-weight ALPINA CLASSIC wheel and MICHELIN tyre combination reduce unsprung mass and conventional non-run-flat tyres support a subtle ride. Besides
the standard wheel/tyre set-up with 245/40 ZR18 front and 265/40 ZR18 rear, a 19" wheel/tyre package is available as an option in either DYNAMIC or the new CLASSIC design.

Alpina showed off the B3 S Bi-Turbo at the 2010 Geneva motor show and it rather passed us by. But this week the car goes on UK sale and it's a good chance to reappraise the junior M3.

We say M3, since the B3 S Bi-Turbo retails at £49,250 in the UK. That's for the saloon, jumping to £55,250 for the Convertible and you can spec your Touring estate or Coupé in Alpina spec too. But there's no V8 under the bonnet – instead the B3 uses BMW's

Alpina is a renown marque in the automotive world. With 45-years of experience Alpina adds – and lets quote – ‘sensation to sports cars that already drive like a dream’. The latest member to the family is this coupé, called the Alpina B3S BiTurbo. And we had to find out what it is capable of!

Based on the standard and current BMW 3 Series, Alpina is offering a package available for Sedan, Coupe, Estate and Convertible. The main subject regarding the kit is based on improving the car’s performances, positioning itself between BMW’s 335i and M3. Additionally, the Germans offer exterior and interior enhancements giving the sports car distinct looks not losing the true BMW presence and giving him enough skills to attack its close relative, the BMW M3 E92.

The B3S BiTurbo debuted at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, back in March, following similar releases in the past few years. The BMW specialist from Buchloe – close to the home ground of Munich – decided to use the 3.0 liter petrol engine available in the current BMW 3 Series line-up as the main donor for the project. The tuned engine was outfitted within our Coupé test car and the main point of focus during the road test.
The power coming from the 3.0 liter straight-six aluminum block with Bi-Turbo charging which delivers 400bhp enough – in Coupe and Saloon form – to give it a 0-100km/h (62mph) time of 4.7 seconds. The touring will need 0.1 second more to hit the 100km/h barrier and the convertible 0.2 seconds. Top speeds are set at 300km/h (188mph) for the first duo, 296 km/h (185mph) for the touring and 298km/h (186mph) for the convertible with the roof closed.

The B3S Bi-Turbo pairs increased performance and torque with fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emissions. The B3S’s engine produces 400hp at 6,000rpm and a maximum torque of 540Nm at 4,500rpm. The sporting engine revs up to 7,000rpm, yet offers a smooth and strong thrust across a wide range – 400Nm of torque is already available from just 1,300rpm, all the way up to the maximum of 6,000.

The six-in-line power plant is outfitted with a second generation direct injection combined with Bi-turbo charging. The air intake and air filter system have been optimized in terms of pressure loss and the exhaust system optimized in terms of back pressure. In combination with Mahle pistons, a maximum boost of 1.2 bar with a compression ratio of 9.4:1 can be achieved.

The 400bhp and 540Nm is converted to the rear wheels trough the Sport automatic ZF 6HP19 Switch Tronic gearbox. If requested you can also get the four-wheel drive transmission. The Alpina Switch Tronic box offers two-sided control; Automatic modes offer easy shifts and relaxing drives, while the manual mode opens the sporty character of the gearbox. On the back of the wheel two simple shift buttons are available for up- and down-shifts. Personally we would prefer pedal shifters instead of these buttons, which lack a true ergonomically control of the gears normally experienced with pedal shifters.

Regarding the looks we can be precise and short. The setup resembles the BMW 3 Series Coupé, but includes some additional upgrades giving it an Alpina touch. The front spoiler reduces lift at the front and enables optimal air flow to the cooling system. The Coupé and Convertible carry a new rear valance which includes the rear diffuser and two distinctive double-ended exhaust pipes. The wheel / tire set-up with 245/40 ZR18 front and 265/40 ZR18 rear complements the exterior looks of the turbocharged 3 Series. Our test vehicle was outfitted with Alpina Classic light-alloy wheels, where each of the twenty spokes leads from the hub right to the edge of the rim. 19 inch rims are available upon request.

You will get a standard set of features like adapted suspension, cruise control with automatic brake function, bi-xenon fog lights, tire pressure indicator and several safety extra. On the inside Alpina logos reveal the distinct upgrade. Additionally, a leather sports steering wheel, Alpina leather sports seats, a set of Alpina board watches, floor mats and door sills are added as well.
The basis of the Alpina B3s BiTurbo is BMW’s 3 Series platform, a similar setup used by its main competitor the BMW M3 E92. The main differences felt immediately after you hit the street are the lighter alloys and improved body control due to the absence of run flats. Same goes for the power increase bringing the 3 Series pretty close to the performance of the E92 M3 and distancing itself from the stock 335i. The exhaust and air intake upgrades let the engine breath more freely, giving it a better tune from the back where only two of the four tail pipes are used.

The handling resembles the 335i setup and gives a decent value to the saying ‘Freude am Fahren’. While driving a bit more sportive you will notice that the feeling between the driver and the car is excellent. A small attention should be made to the steering at lower speeds, it could have been a bit lighter.

Alpina’s statement that the B3S Biturbo is comparable to BMW’s current V8-powered M3 is a definite go for us, if only it would have had an option of a manual. In any case you could give it the name tag the ultimate road-going 3 Series, but in the end it is mostly comparable to its master and not resembling its complete character. Its own character is different somehow, a master of deception combined with a wonderful 3.0 liter twin-turbo engine propelling the vehicle beyond any available stock 3 Series.

Thanks to the Belgian Alpina importer, Jean-Michel Martin, giving us the chance to drive this Alpina sports car.

In a world where 40 million Americans recently revealed they had at least one tattoo adorning their bodies, individuality is everything. Given such a desire for differentiation, the thought that even the latest V8-propelled, £50k-plus BMW M3 could soon prove to be too common is a perfectly excusable one, a concern that also justifies this BMW Alpina B3 BiTurbo's existence.

On first impressions there are conspicuous similarities between the obscure Alpina and . Each takes a regular 3-Series as its starting point. Each messes with the chassis, engine, bodywork and interior. Each also offers levels of acceleration that promise to wrench organs, tighten butt cheeks and plaster a permanent rictus grin across their drivers' faces.

And that's where the similarities begin to fade. The Alpina takes the three-litre straight six from the already confusingly titled 335i as the starting point for its engine, in place of the M3's heavier four-litre V8.

The upgrades are relatively straightforward: boost pressure for the sequential twin turbos has been dialled up to 1.1 bar, with toughened Mahle pistons bolted inside to cope with the extra strain.

The raw stats suggest 355bhp next to the M3's 414bhp and 369lb ft of torque in place of the M3's comparatively meagre 295lb ft, while reality reveals a car that is bruisingly, ceaselessly quick without nearly so much high-revving effort needing to be invested by its driver.

0-62mph passes in the exact same 4.8 seconds as the M3, while - for the record - removing the restrictor results in a top speed 22mph higher than an M3 is allowed to manage. And yet, on average, the B3 gets you 6.3 miles further on every gallon.

This is a far easier car to live with, a fact compounded by the use of a six-speed auto 'box in place of the M3's six-speed manual and stiff clutch. The B3 features steering wheel mounted buttons to leave an element of driver control, their shifts reprogrammed to respond even faster than in an equivalent auto-optioned 335i. The use of a chassis spec similar to a 335i Sport's, but with the run-flat tyres ditched, provides a ride more supple, if ultimately less edgy, than an M3's.

In the incestuous worlds of BMW and Alpina, the mechanical mods are all assembled on BMW's regular 3-Series production line while Alpina only adds the bodykit and the bizarre (thankfully optional) twin-toned, diamond-patterned Deutschland of Leather inside afterwards. Right there is the only point at which well-informed exclusivity takes a step back, and discretion exits the building.
