When it comes to the possibility of a BMW X7, we’ve heard all kinds of things. First, there were rumors saying it would be produced and then the rumors were pulled back saying that plans for the X7 had been canceled. Now, it has turned into a game of tennis with the plans switching back to the production side yet again. That’s right, the SUV is back on track, but only because the Chinese market is asking for it.
This may seem like it came out of nowhere, and it has. Wall Street Journal recently published an article on the upcoming world’s largest economic summit in Seoul. The main topic of this summit is “global rebalancing,” but amidst all of the mumbo jumbo is a couple of paragraphs that lead us to believe that BMW is rethinking its decision to pull the BMW X7 out.
"So, BMW is downshifting. While it makes one big sedan especially for the Chinese market, it isn’t ramping up production enough to fill all its Chinese orders. It wants to make sure it has sufficient supply for the U.S. and Germany."
"The company is also counting on the U.S. to rebound more quickly than doom-and-gloomers think, making rebalancing less necessary than the leaders gathered in Seoul believe. It is even reconsidering its decision to cancel a new large SUV, which was meant mainly for U.S. buyers."
Is the X7 back on? We think so. All we need to find out now is if BMW will be relying more on the growing Chinese market as stated in the report, or if the plans for the X7 to be sold in America will stand.
While it may have seemed unlikely before 1999 when the original X5 was launched, BMW has enjoyed explosive growth in the crossover utility world – so much so that it's expanded its lineup to include the X1, X3 and X6 as well. The X5 and X6 have even spawned M versions, and the X3 is apparently slated to follow suit. But that's hardly the extent of it, as the Bavarian automaker is reportedly developing a larger X7.
According to Automobile, the rumored X7 (codenamed F17) will go head-to-head with the Mercedes-Benz GL and a possible Audi Q9 – you know, in case the Q7 isn't quite big enough. To differentiate it from the X5, the mooted X7 will reportedly pack a third row of seats for seven-passenger capability.
This isn't the first we've heard of the X7, of course. The program was widely reported as canceled back in 2008 thanks largely to poor economic conditions in markets like the United States. The model had been scheduled for a 2013 introduction. Has a modestly improving economy and America's relentless appetite for crossovers rekindled the project? If Automobile is to be believed, apparently so..
A new performance edition 2002 X5 HP, an X5 that pushes power up from 282 horsepower to an M-worthy 347 horses is close to market. To achieve these impressive gains, an exclusive 4.6-liter version of the V-8 engine has been prepared. With a five-speed Steptronic transmission, the 354 lb-ft of torque can be harnessed in automatic mode or shifted manually. The exterior will sport distinct, body-color trim and the barrel-sized wheels will wear 20-inch tires when the X5 HP goes on sale in fall 2001.
Looking further down the Bavarian pipeline, two all-new models will flank the successful X5 Series at opposite ends of the BMW spectrum. First off the drawing board will be an X3 sport/utility vehicle in 2004, followed a year later by a luxurious X7. Product planners reportedly submitted two different design proposals for the small 'ute, including a "softroader" based on a modified 330xi wagon, similar in concept to a Subaru Legacy Outback and Volvo V70 Cross Country. BMW is also considering a vehicle more in the Land Rover Freelander vein. This concept utilizes fewer 3 Series components, as it emphasizes adventure with a dramatic exterior and off-road components, such as heavy-duty suspension and a low-range transfer case.
In either guise, the X3 will likely be offered with a choice of four- and six-cylinder engines, just as with the sedan, according to BMW insiders. Full-time four-wheel drive, featuring the sophisticated electronic systems ASC+T and DSC 3 to optimize its off-road ability, will be standard, together with independent suspension for accomplished on-road dynamics.
Currently, the projects are at an early stage, with design proposals being submitted by BMW's Design Works center in California and the Munich HQ styling studio. A well-placed BMW source has indicated that the more traditional, X5-like approach is the leading concept for production.
For both the X3 and X7, the company will modify the X5's sophisticated platform to suit. (BMW will not utilize the Land Rover ladder frame as some rumors have asserted.) Based on inside information, our computer-enhanced picture and illustrations show the likely look of the X3 and X7. Naturally, both will feature unique bodywork and interiors compared with their sedan counterparts.
The X7 will reportedly feature technology from the next-generation Range Rover, which BMW is obligated to complete as part of the agreement with Ford. Compared to the Range Rover, however, the X7 will favor on-road driving rather than mountain climbing, although adjustable air suspension should see it deliver the most adept off-road performance of all the X vehicles. Both V-8 and V-12 gasoline engines, plus the new V-8 super-diesel, will be offered.
For the American market, where upscale trucks are in demand, BMW is also developing an X5 pickup derivative with an extended cabin for four to five passengers. The short bed layout will necessitate an increase in wheelbase and overall length compared to its siblings. Rumored development of a stretched X5 dovetails nicely with this project.
Although best known for its driver-oriented cars, BMW will soon unleash a complete X assault that promises to push design, technology, and function boundaries.
In an article about the next-generation BMW X5 and BMW X6, Automobile Magazine says that the Bavarian automaker is considering a ‘long-wheelbase X7 based on the X5/X6 platform.
Internally known as the F17, the 7-seater BMW SUV would take on the likes of the upcoming Audi Q9 and the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. However, BMW continues to face some issues, one being that SUVs of that size aren’t socially acceptable and they don’t look good on CO2 balance sheets either.
Nonetheless, BMW could make the X7 full-size SUV acceptable by building it on an aluminum space frame architecture. The model will only appeal to three markets including the United States, China and Russia.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about BMW considering a full-size SUV known as the X7. The model has been rumored many times before and BMW itself has continuously denied that it is considering such a model.
It seems that the canceled X7 project gets back in the Germans plans as the demand is increasing on the mainly markets for BMW. Thanks to Friedrich Eichiner, a BMW official, the rumors on the new BMW X7 SUV returned in the foreground as the German official stated that they are still considering that is enough room in their range for a new SUV.
About two years ago we talked about this project but the Germans decided that this project is a dead-end one, so they quitted the idea, mainly of the financial problems worldwide. However, we can see a new German SUV soon as the important markets such as China are interested in this business.
According to the first details, the BMW X7 would be 30 mm longer and thus, at the interior will be enough room for seven passangers, creating an advantage ahead of the X5 and X6 little brothers.
In a Board of Directors meeting today, the BMW CEO, Norbert Reithofer, announced some of the german automaker’s plan for the future.
The so rumored BMW X7 project, announced a while ago by the friends at Worldcarfans, has been canceled. We had an article on the X7, back in June, and we confirmed with our sources at that time, that there will be no BMW X7 whatsoever.
As expected, BMW is definitely going to launch the X6 Hybrid along with the new 2009 BMW 7 Series Hybrid version. The 7 Hybrid will make its debut in the second half of 2009.
There is also confirmation that a four door GT model will make its way into the market as well, but we have no information on when they plan to release it.
On a different note, the rumored MINI SAV and a new Phantom Rolls-Royce mode are coming as well.
Most of these information have been confirmed already with our sources, but we would like to thank one of the moderators from Germancarzone for sharing, openly with everyone, more extensive details
One of the greatest Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) the world had ever seen, BMW X7, faced thousands of rumors so far about its new 2014 version. First rumor was that, the monster SUV is going to be produced massively for production in 2014, but later it replaced with another rumor that, BMW is not going to produce new versions of X7. Now, the fact is that, there will be definitely a 2014 version of BMW X7, only because, says officials, the Chinese market had demanded it in a massive amount. Even though, deeper digs reveals that, there is a rethinking is going about launching X7 in 2014 within brand heads.
This rethinking is mainly because of the economic imbalance playing all over the world, which may affect the market of big cars. However, BMW seems to be downshifting production. However, car fans all over the world expect the X7 to be produced massively. US are the only one place, which has sufficient supply of X7 from BMW, nowadays. Less recession in China says that they will be safe for any bigger car. Latest revealing reports that, the new 2014 BMW X7 will be coded as F17 and will have longer wheel base than its predecessors.
Also said that, a new third row also will be installed, which will increase the seating capacity to seven. Analysts and experts says, standard BMW SUV design will be kept in the model, while there may be adoption from X6, because, X7 is the largest luxury SUV. Releases reported that company’s trend kidney grille will be kept in the front fascia, along with large bumpers with large air intakes, which creates the giant look for this high powered machine. High quality leather along with wooden finished interior are some of the details revealed so far except keeping the same cockpit like technical tools mounted in dashboard.
For stronger iron and steel, BMW X7 planning to launch in 2014, will have same engine as that of X6. That is 4.4 liter V8 engine enough to pull up the vehicle in off road wanderings. This 4.4 liter engine will be able to deliver 400 hp and 450lb.-ft of torque. Another option expected is, 3.0 liter inline six-cylinder engine with power rating 300 hp and 300 lb.-ft of torque. Another following version, as revealed by one of top official, called M version will have 4.4-liter V8 engine, with 555 hp delivering power at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque. On pressing down your right foot, the speedometer will swept 0 to 60 mph in around 5 seconds, and top speed is restricted electronically 155 mph, which arose as a drawback.
On launching this biggest SUV X7 in 2014, BMW will enter to the top of SUV market, an important step in BMW’s biz life, and there starts the tough competition with leading models like Cadillac Escalade and Lexus LX570. Reviewers added that, the vehicle will be available from 2013 itself.
Type the behavior of an SUV in the automotive market, same with BMW which was also successful with a BMW SUV, so BMW will present a variant of their new SUV the BMW X7 SUV. The BMW X7 in 2008 never to be rebuilt by BMW but with the financial crisis that hit the BMW was postponed to produce BMW X7 and concentrate more on fuel-efficient cars.
As noted autoevolution, the BMW X7 SUV produced for the USA market, with an improving economy is also expected of BMW X7 will be successful like BMX X Series. The BMW SUV market would compete with the Chevy Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Escalade etc.
Now BMW’s market share not only from America, when a crisis occurs BMW began redirecting to the Chinese market and now demand proven BMW for China’s large enough even according to Bernstein Research research institute 50% of BMW’s profits now come from China.
When it comes to the possibility of a BMW X7, we’ve heard all kinds of things. Various sources are reporting today the initial BMW X7 info as the German company has announced its plans of building a larger SUV, larger than the X5 that is. Previous plans of building the BMW X7 were shut down due to the financial crisis of the last two years. Apparently, BMW is doing better now and it looks to re-open the BMW X7 project.
The BMW X7 will be destined for growing markets, such as China and Germany, but will probably be sold in the whole of Europe and the United States. Well the Chinese are known for having a soft spot for large cars, so it's natural BMW is considering an even larger (than the X5) X7 SUV. after all, Mercedes does have the GL Class...
The exact details of the BMW X7 are not known yet, as the new SUV is still in a rumor phase. We'll have more details on the BMW X7 as soon as they become available.
BMW may yet build its super luxury SUV, according to company insiders. Three years ago we were supposed to see a BMW X7 on our roads, a behemoth of high proportions aimed at rivalling the Land Rover Range Rover set. Mercedes-Benz knew about it too, as they prepared their own vehicle for this segment, the GL-Class. Something happened along the way, probably at the same time as when BMW sold Land Rover to Ford.
Now a source says the X7 is merely “sleeping”, waiting to see what happens with the US SUV market. From where we stand it doesn’t look too good for X7 survival, which may prompt a total cancellation of project X7. That whole big SUV segment is under extreme fire from environmental lobbyists and generally anti-SUV groups, hence X3, MINI SUV and X1. We have been told the X7 would only work if alternative fuels like hydrogen and hybrid technology become mainstream. Hopefully, we will find out soon enough.
