Auction houses like Barrett Jackson are the perfect places to find special edition vehicles. All you need is steely determination, glass full of patience, and pockets full of cash - in some cases, more than that.
Recently, a special edition Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was auctioned off at Barrett Jackson in Las Vegas, raking in an estimated $250,000 from some deep-pocketed bidder who you might have heard of: NASCAR Sprint Cup team owner Rick Hendricks.
This particular Camaro is noted for being the first production Camaro ZL1 to find an owner - good job, Mr. Hendricks! - and while it’s being touted as such, it’s actually the 69th ZL to be produced by General Motors.
So why is it a special edition?
For one, it’s being advertised as an anniversary model of the 1969 Camaro ZL1, hence the 69th model designation. It’s also the only Camaro ZL1 to be dressed in a Carbon Flash Metallic exterior paint finish, making it a true one-of-a-kind. The only downside is that General Motors decided against tweaking the muscle car’s outstanding 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 580 horsepower and over 550 lb/ft of torque. But even without the engine upgrade, the ZL1’s numbers are still mighty, mighty impressive.
Hendricks shelling out around a quarter-of-a-million might be a little too steep given the circumstances, but the NASCAR team owner and car dealership mogul should be comforted in knowing that proceeds from the sale of the ZL1 ’69 Carbon Flash’ will go directly to the YMCA of Southern Nevada.
We have to admit that we tend to lean toward the Ford Mustang when it comes time to pick our favorite pony car, but the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 may change all that. The track-bred beast packs supercharged power, one very advanced magnetic suspension setup and a whole heap of attitude. Now, General Motors is out to build some anticipation for the newest member of the Camaro clan with a set of behind the scenes ads designed to get us all licking our chops before the vehicle arrives in showrooms.
The first two clips have already hit the interwebs, and they focus on the fact that the ZL1 will pack a customizable launch control mode that's accessible merely by mashing the traction control button twice. That kind of kit is good for setting fire to the quarter mile and generally embarrassing one and all from stoplight to stoplight. The second ad focuses a little more heavily on the advanced suspension at work in the ZL1, and includes a few shots of the mighty Bowtie carving up a track. Hit the jump to enjoy.
After driving a loaded SS, I can say GM has more work to do than handling and power here.
You can't see **** out of the car, the guages are ugly as sin, shifter linkage is truck-like (go figure its a tremec), and the car inspires no driver confidence. These all need to be fixed before adding more power.
I'm curious however to see if this will cannibalize sales of the lower end Corvette models. The ZL1 has alot on it's plate to undo that the base models ruined for me and many others. My big concern is how well will this car do with ALL of the electronic off. Is it really a drivers car? or does it suck? Thats the question. Anyone can whizz around a track with the help of a computer, only a pro can turn it all off and run faster still. And thats where the quality of chassis, suspension, and engine tuning really come out to be shown for what they are. Hopefully GM doesn't flop it here. The GT500 has more power waiting with just a pulley swap, or a tune, and not just alittle...
