The test drive of this new Ford Escape would be conducted latest by late summer of 2011.The Escape Hybrid was the first vehicle to combine SUV capability with the outstanding fuel economy and low environmental impact of a full hybrid vehicle. It has the ability to travel at speeds up to 44 miles per hour in full electric mode and uses no fuel when idling, such as when you’re stopped at a traffic light. The Escape Hybrid delivers an impressive 34 city mpg* when both the gas engine and electric motor are powering the vehicle. In addition, it features comfortable seating for five and a versatile cargo area.

The Ford Escape Hybrid was not only the first U.S.-built hybrid electric vehicle, it was also the first hybrid sport-utility vehicle--or crossover, if you prefer.

It's had a good run, starting in the fall of 2004 and continuing through the 2012 model year. As of the end of September, Ford has sold 110,000 Escape Hybrids, along with 12,000 related vehicles under the Mercury and Mazda badges

But all good things must come to an end, apparently. This will be the last year for the Escape Hybrid; after 2012, it will be replaced with the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid, a five-seat small minivan that will not offer an all-wheel drive option as the Escape Hybrid did.

After a full decade on the market, the Ford Escape is at last getting a ground-up redesign, and spies have caught this development mule out on an R&D mission. Although its innards are hidden beneath the curvy body of the current European Ford Kuga—which itself could have made a fitting second-gen Escape years ago—this vehicle gives away its actual identity with covered air intakes up front and ill-fitting tailpipes out back. However little we can actually see here, it is certain that the second-generation Escape will be a vastly different creature, both aesthetically and dynamically, from the Clinton-era ute we know now.

Ford previewed the new look at the Detroit auto show with the Vertrek concept, a clear evolution of both the Kuga’s shape, and Ford’s “Kinetic design” styling language. The most fundamental change will be a switch to Ford’s global C platform, which also serves as the foundation for the 2012 Focus, the upcoming C-Max, and the current Kuga, thereby allowing the Kuga and Escape to be merged into one global product.
The 2012 Ford Escape sees no major changes pending a redesign due in calendar 2012 as a 2013 model. This compact SUV is a 5-passenger, 4-door wagon that includes a liftgate with opening glass. Escape comes in XLS, XLT, and Limited trims, each with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available on all but the XLS. All have a standard 171-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. Optional on XLT and Limited is a 240-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 that's capable of running on gasoline and/or E85 ethanol-blended fuel. The front-drive XLS has a standard 5-speed manual transmission. Optional on that model and standard on all others is a 6-speed automatic.

A gas/electric Hybrid also returns in Base and Limited trims. It teams a 155-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gas engine with an electric motor. It requires no plug-in charging and uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that behaves much like an automatic. Maximum towing capacities are: 1,500 pounds for the conventional 4-cylinder; 3,500 pounds for the V6; and 1,000 pounds for the Hybrid. Safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, and front-side airbags. Also available are leather upholstery, heated front seats, rear-obstacle detection, a navigation system, and Ford's Sync voice-activated control for cell phones and MP3 players. A rearview camera is available, as is Ford's MyKey, which allows owners to program a key that can limit the vehicle's top speed and audio volume. Escape also offers Ford's Active Park Assist, which uses ultrasonic sensors to help automatically guide the vehicle into a parallel-parking space.

We had a feeling this would be the case in June, when we published a plea for Ford to retain the only mechanical all-wheel drive hybrid on the market (smaller than the full-size truck-based sport utilities from Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac, anyhow).

But for hybrid family hauling, as of next year, it'll be the C-Max or nothing.

So what's the moral of the story? Simple.

If you want a Ford Escape Hybrid, you have only several months left to buy one new. Ford assures us there are 2012 Escape Hybrid models at dealers now, but won't tell us when the new 2013 Ford Escape--which offers several high-MPG options but no hybrid--will go on sale.

The 2013 Ford Escape will be largely based on the Vertrek Concept that the company showed in January at the Detroit Auto Show, and it will continue to offer mechanical all-wheel drive.

Nowadays, Ford is hitting more home runs, and without any chemical augmentation, either. The 2012 Ford Escape is not exactly one of them, however, as this long-serving platform carries on unchanged until the appearance of a complete redesign slated for next year.

That's not to say the Escape has been benched for 2012. Despite its aged design, it remains a very popular vehicle among compact crossover consumers. Indeed it's consistently been among the top-selling vehicles thanks to its handsome styling, spirited performance and numerous high-tech features. Among the latter innovations is Sync, the affordable voice-activated interface for audio features. In addition the Escape now offers Auto Park, a Ford system that enables the Escape to identify a likely parallel parking spot and then steer into the slot while you just tend to the gas and brake. The Ford Escape also continues to be the only model in its class that's offered as a hybrid, which delivers about 30 mpg in combined driving.

Impressive as all that might be, potential buyers should know that the 2012 Ford Escape nonetheless lacks a few key items offered by most of its rivals, such as a telescoping steering wheel and a sliding/reclining backseat. And folding that backseat is a multistep hassle compared to the simple flip-down design of other crossovers. But it's the Escape's brakes that have it trailing the competition. Where most of them have four-wheel disc brakes, the Escape uses drum brakes in the rear that simply don't have the power or resistance to fade.

Provided it's fitted with a full array of options, a 2012 Ford Escape will likely please those who desire the latest high-tech features. But there are plenty of other heavy hitters in the compact crossover SUV segment these days, such as the Chevrolet Equinox, Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage, Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4 that best the Ford in terms of overall refinement and functionality. Of course, we expect next year will see the redesigned Escape swinging for the fences.
